In the United States, diabetes mellitus disproportionately impacts adults over 65, and the prevalence in this population is continuing to grow. This group's health care coverage, often provided through Medicare, does not support routine dental care, leaving many without affordable options for care. Unfortunately, for these older adults living without dental coverage, diabetes is a significant risk factor for periodontal disease and is associated with additional diabetes complications. This session explores a pilot interdisciplinary research project to adapt an existing DSMES curriculum to incorporate oral and periodontal health information and integrate periodontitis screening and referral into the DSMES classes.
