D29 - Bridging the Gap: Addressing Bias and Health Inequity in T2D and Sickle Cell Disease

Diabetes disproportionately affects minority populations in the U.S. with American Indians/Alaskan Native representing 13.6%, followed by 12.1% of Blacks, 11.7% of Hispanics, and 9.1% of Asian Americans. This disparity underscores the urgent need to address healthcare inequities. Moreover, individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are becoming more likely to be diagnosed with T2D. This session explores the intersection of T2D and SCD by focusing on the critical roles of patient-engagement and education in mitigating health disparities. We will discuss how conscious and unconscious bias can influence patient care and lead to suboptimal outcomes. To address this, we will introduce the Spot Check Methodology, a patient-centered approach.
